When a notable Virginia family opens up their 1,200 acre private retreat to the public to reserve for the first time, it makes me curious to see what’s what there. The Lodge at Moss Neck, near the historic small city of Fredericksburg, Virginia, is important not only for the Silver family’s foray into hospitality but also for the impressive amenities and experiences they provide for their guests.

Spencer Silver, third generation president of Silver Companies, the owners of The Lodge at Moss Neck, notes, “The Lodge at Moss Neck has long been our private and convenient retreat while in the D.C. area, and we are now sharing its exclusivity and exceptional service with more guests. For those seeking a secluded and ultra-luxurious group getaway or event venue, I invite you to discover The Lodge at Moss Neck.”

Formerly used only as a private retreat for friends, family and the occasional business gathering, this rustic chic lodge, with just 15 suites including a Presidential Suite, embodies Southern charm and warmth. From the apple and pear tree lined, mile-and-a-half long drive from the stone entryway gates to the main lodge, guests drive past a trio of Clydesdale horses grazing at a classic wooden fence and on past rolling fields of farmland, and find themselves at the handsome local stone centerpiece lodge.

The main building’s public rooms and suites features an impressive collection of original oil paintings, showcasing the region’s history, specially commissioned for the lodge. The grand Great Room has a stunning view across the fields and a towering double-sided stone fireplace which also opens to the dining room.

The guest suites are spacious and feature king beds dressed with cozy country-style linens, dark wood tables and dressers, all with finishes sourced from the farm. The stone walled bathrooms have slate floors, glass enclosed floor to ceiling tiled showers, cherry cabinetry and organic toiletries. Each suite has views overlooking the farm or resort-style pool.

As only one group is allowed to book at a time, with a six-room minimum, guests have the run of the estate.

That means outdoor outings galore- skeet shooting, archery, horseback riding or horse-drawn carriage rides, swimming, hiking or cycling along scenic trails, pickleball, yoga and even relic hunting.

Let’s go indoors: The Spa at Moss Neck, offers tranquility in its own building with a fireside lounge. For the more active, there’s a full-size basketball court and in a separate game/theater room, a pool table and a complete bar. For children and adults alike, there’s a petting zoo with goats and ponies. You can also collect eggs from the flocks of chickens on the farm.

The surrounding working farm provides fruits, vegetables, herbs and more to the chef, Joel Alvarado, and his culinary team. Chef Alvarado creates customized menus for groups with an eye of what’s in-season.

The bottom line is that for exclusivity, privacy, unique menus and dining options and top service, The Lodge at Moss Neck is inked in as my next favorite destination for multi-generational travel and event gala or corporate events. Check it out for yourself before the crowds come in.
